Heartwood Farm offers Thoroughbred boarding for broodmares, foals, and yearlings on 1,200 acres of some of the most productive land in Bourbon County.
The land itself is part of what we offer. What we bring to it is attention. We know our horses individually: their temperaments, their tendencies, their rhythms. Boarding at Heartwood means your horse is not one of many managed from a distance; it is a horse that is known, watched, and cared for by people who understand what good horsemanship looks like in practice.
Our goal is the same for every horse in our care: give it the strongest possible foundation so that when it moves on to the next stage of its career, it is prepared for everything that will be asked of it.
Sarah Sutherland has managed Thoroughbred consignments at the highest levels of the Kentucky sales market for 17 years. Juan Aguilar has spent his career raising horses and presenting them at the major sales. Together, they bring a standard of presentation—and a network of relationships—that is difficult to replicate.
What sets our consignment program apart is what we know before the horse ever steps onto the van. Because we board the mares, raise the foals, and manage the yearlings, we know the families. When buyers ask questions, we have the answers.
We represent clients at Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton. We are straightforward with clients about what their horses are and what to expect.
Good horsemanship is about more than what happens in front of you. The decisions that shape a program—which stallion, which mare, which direction—require the kind of knowledge that only comes from being close to the horses and their families over time.
At Heartwood, that knowledge is part of what we offer. We know the mares on this farm, what they have produced year after year, and the traits that run through their families. When it comes time to make the decisions that will define your program for years to come, we are well placed to help you think them through.
For clients who want more than a boarding or consignment relationship, Sarah and Juan are available to assist with mating decisions, portfolio management, and the longer-term planning that turns a good horse operation into a great one.
